SCALE-AEM and NEREUS join forces on AEM electrolysis

A new collaboration on the works: SCALE-AEM and NEREUS have agreed to work together!

Both Horizon Europe projects are tackling the same challenge: making anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolysis ready for industrial green hydrogen production. Rather than working in parallel, the two projects will share knowledge, exchange results and coordinate their outreach to industry and the wider hydrogen community.

Meet NEREUS

NEREUS (Next-Generation Scalable AEM Electrolyzers as Sustainable Hydrogen Production System) is an EU-funded project developing next-generation AEM electrolysers for efficient, cost-competitive hydrogen production.

AEM electrolysis sits between the two established technologies. It can combine the low cost of alkaline systems with the compact design and fast dynamic response of PEM electrolysis. Getting there still requires progress on materials durability, operation at high current density, scalable manufacturing, integration with renewables and market readiness.

NEREUS addresses these barriers by combining:

  • compact stack architectures

  • platinum-group-metal-free materials

  • advanced membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs)

  • smart Balance of Plant components

  • AI-driven diagnostics

The goal is to develop and validate AEM electrolyser technology that operates flexibly with renewable energy, lasts longer, delivers high performance and lowers the cost of hydrogen, paving the way for industrial scale-up.

Why it makes sense

The two projects share a technology, a goal and a key partner. NEREUS is coordinated by Antares, which also plays a central role in SCALE-AEM. That gives both teams a direct line between the projects from day one.

The overlap is real. Both are working towards durable, scalable AEM electrolysers that can compete on cost and run on renewable power. Sharing what works, and what doesn't, saves time and helps avoid duplicated effort across EU-funded research.

What comes next

The collaboration will focus on joint communication and dissemination. In practice, this means:

  • sharing news, results and milestones across both projects' channels

  • cross-promoting events, webinars and publications

  • exploring joint dissemination activities aimed at industry and the research community

  • keeping an open exchange between the technical teams where results overlap

We will share updates as the collaboration develops.
